SPONDYLODISCITIS - SPINAL INFECTION
Introduction
Spondylodiscitis Symtoms is an infection in spinal bones and discs causing damage in these which may further cause nerve or spinal cord compression.. Spinal infections are caused by different pathogens that may be bacterial, fungal, or parasitic.
Comprehensively Spinal Infection Spondylodiscitis Treatment is a term referred to as vertebral osteomyelitis, spondylitis, and discitis.
Damage in disc and bones due to infection can cause instability in the spine leading to kyphotic deformity due to vertebral collapse.
It can further cause compression over nerves or spinal cord which may lead to quadriperesia or paraparesis i.e. weakness in legs or hands or both.
Compression over cord may be due to deformity caused by damage in bones and disc or it may be due to pus formation by the infectious bacteria.
Symptoms Of Spondylodiscitis
The common symptoms caused by Spondylodiscitis include:
- Severe back pain or neck pain
- Restricted range of motions
- Pain in legs or hands
- Weakness in legs or hands and inability to bear weight.
- Anorexia, fever, loss of appetite, weight loss, or nausea
- Incontinence of bladder and bowels
- Constant pain, worsening at night
Risk Factors to Develop Spondylodiscitis
- Decreased in body immunity in patients with CVD, renal failure, chronic hepatitis or liver cirrhosis
- Obesity
- Drug abuse
- Regular steroid intake
- Alcohol and nicotine abuse
- HIV infection
- Multiple morbidities
- Chemotherapy or immunotherapy for cancer treatment.
Diagnosis of Spondylodiscitis
Diagnosis- D6-7 spinal infection Tuberculosis
The doctor asks the patient about their medical history, symptoms, as comorbidities like Diabetes.
He may l
Prescribe some blood infection markers tests like CBC, ESR, CRP.
Imaging to diagnose spondylodiscitis to be done like X-rays, CT scan or MRI of the involved spine.
To confirm the diagnosis and type of infection, Biopsy is mandatory with culture and sensitivity for extracted pus from spine.
Management
- Conservative approach
The conservative Spondylodiscitis Treatment in Delhi NCR includes antibiotics and immobilization for a certain period. It is recommended either when the infection is in its initial stage or when bone eaten up by infection is very less. The braces or corsets is given for Immobilization.
- Surgery
The surgery is recommended in cases when there is instability in spine after infection or persistent pain or deformity formation after infection or when patient fails for conservative treatment.
The surgery recommended is debridement and fixation stabilization and decompression with biopsy and culture and sensitivity of pus extracted.
Surgery is done through open conventional methods or minimal invasive techniques also by Dr. Sanyam Jain which is the Nest Spine Surgeon in Delhi NCR.
